(Opening shot: fade in to an overview of Tarrytown during the day.)
Narrator: There was a special sound in the air one summer morning at Tarrytown Airport. Tomorrow was Concert Day. Each of the planes was going to sing a song. Tracy was in charge, and she was busy trying to get everybody organized.
(Snuffy is hiding next to the hangar; he zips out of frame.)
Tracy: Brenda! Brenda! (Brenda walks up.)
Brenda: Tracy, what's wrong?
Tracy: Everyone's supposed to rehearse their songs today, and we're already behind schedule. (Close-up of Brenda.)
Brenda: Oh, it's not so bad. (She pulls out her watch.) Oh, yeah, see? We're only running a few minutes behind. I tell you what, while I go set up the stage, why don't you go and check on everybody to see if they're ready— (Widen to frame Tracy.) —then you can rehearse.
Tracy: Great idea! See ya!
(She exits and Brenda walks o.s.; cut to outside. Tracy makes her way down the taxiway.)
Tracy: Wow, let's see. I think that's everybody. Old Oscar, Revvin' Evan, Tuffy, Jay Jay, Herky, Big Jake, Savannah, Snuffy— (She gasps, realizing something.) Snuffy! Wait a minute. I haven't checked in with Snuffy!
(As Tracy speaks, Snuffy is seen in the distance; he taxis slowly to the hangar and looks for a place to hide. He exits out of frame.)
Tracy: As a matter of fact, I haven't even seen Snuffy. Hmm. I wonder where he is.
(She starts to look for Snuffy; cut to Old Oscar's barn as Snuffy comes into view.)
Snuffy: Uh...maybe I'd better hide in Old Oscar's barn. She'll never find me there.
(Snuffy taxis into the barn, but just as he does, he backs up; Tracy has found him and comes out.)
Tracy: There you are! I've been looking all over for you. Are you ready to do your song?
Snuffy: No.
Tracy: We're supposed to sing tomorrow.
Snuffy: Uh...okay. So I have to choose a color that makes me want to sing?
Tracy: Exactly! All you do is choose whichever color inspires you the most.
Snuffy: Uh, okay. But, uh...Tracy, what does "inspires" mean?
Tracy: It means that it makes you feel good. And it makes you want to sing. Look, why don't you watch me do my song? That might give you a few ideas. (She exits; Snuffy follows behind her.)
Snuffy: Okay.
Serene acoustic guitar melody/flute melody with backing strings, slow 4 (D major)
(Dissolve to a shot of the runway at sunrise; Tracy taxis into view and beholds it.)
Tracy: The sun comes up with a yellow glow
Makes everything in the whole world grow
(Dissolve to an extreme close-up of her face before she backs up a little framing all of her, then cut to the sun as she flies close to it.)
Wrap me up, wrap me up, wrap me up in yellow
(Fade to yellow, then to an overview of Tracy surrounded by fields of daffodils, then dissolve to a freeze-frame shot of a baby chick partially in its eggshell.)
Tracy: Yellow is a bundle of daffodils
Yellow is a chick being born
(Dissolve to a close-up of the moon at nighttime, pulling back to reveal Tracy is looking at it through a telescope.)
Yellow is the moon climbing over the hills
Yellow is sweet baby corn
(Dissolve to a shot of the sun from earlier; Tracy flies slowly away from it.)
Tracy: When you wrap me up, wrap me up in yellow
(Fade to yellow, then to an extreme close-up of Tracy's face before she backs up; she is back at the airport.)
Tracy: Wrap me up in yellow
Song ends
Tracy: Anything yet?
Snuffy: Uh...oh... (shaking head) Nope. (Jay Jay enters.)
Tracy: Jay Jay, it's your turn.
Jay Jay: Great! What do you want me to do?
Tracy: Just come up and start singing.
Light, jaunty stoptime melody with drums/brass/woodwinds, brisk 4 (D major)
(The blue jet plane heads toward the hangar-stage and clears his throat for a few seconds; on the banner, the far left circle has been colored yellow, probably to keep track of who already rehearsed.)
Jay Jay: This song is about my favorite color— (Spinning around) —blue!
(A flash of light, and the lead jet has become decreased in size to that of a toy jet; in addition, he is painted grayish-white all over, jets included.)
Jay Jay: When I was just a baby jet
Haven't picked my colors yet
(Oscar, Savannah and Big Jake come to marvel at him.)
They asked me what I wanted to be
(Snap to blue, which resolves into Jay Jay's wing as he swoops away from the camera. He is flying through the blue sky, and is back to his regular lively and size.)
I said blue, Absolutely blue, Absolutely blue
(He barrel rolls once.)
Blue for me
(Now he flies over the wide ocean.)
Jay Jay: Now what we do without the blue of the sea?
(He splashes into the water and swims alongside a blue whale.)
What in the world would a blue whale be?
I'm telling you now, we couldn't do without it
It makes me blue just thinkin' about it
(Back on land, he drives through the streets of downtown and eyes a blue hummingbird that flits by.)
Jay Jay: From all the colors I have found
Flashed all over Tarrytown
I'm certain that the bluebirds agree
(He turns his back to the camera for a moment, showing off his paintwork.)
The best is blue, absolutely blue, absolutely blue for me
(Now back in the sky, he spins around sideways twice, before rising high up.)
Jay Jay: Yeah, it's true, absolutely blue, absolutely blue
Blue for me
(He zips back to the hangar, the second circle from the left on the banner having filled in with dark blue.)
Ha-ha!
Song ends in time with last line
Tracy: So, what'd you think?
Snuffy: That was great, but I still don't know which color I like the most. How am I going to find one that ins— in— i—
Tracy: Inspires?
Snuffy: Right, right. ...inspires me?
Tracy: Okay, look, why don't you watch Savannah and Big Jake's duet? That song might inspire you to be inspired.
Snuffy: Uh...now-now I'm totally confused.
Gentle acoustic guitar/flute melody with horns, slow 4 (G major)
Tracy: All right, Big Jake, Savannah. It's your turn.
(Big Jake and Savannah head toward the hangar-stage.)
Savannah: So far, we've heard the joys of blue and yellow
Big Jake: But sure as she's a gal
Savannah: And he's a fellow
Big Jake: There's a color without question
Savannah: That stands out from the rest
Big Jake: When flying high above it all
Both: We're sure this one's the best
Big Jake: There's a color that can make me sing
Savannah: Tickle me underneath my wing!
Big Jake: Grassy meadow in the early spring
Both: It's green, green, green
Savannah: Little froggy on a lily pad
Big Jake: Sourest pickle that I ever had
Savannah: Tallest pines I've ever seen
Both: Are green, green, green
(Fade to green, then dissolve to a head-on view of them in the hills.)
Both: And though when we fly round this beautiful land,
Over the clover, we understand
(They fly downward; cut to a stretch of forest. The old prop plane and the supersonic jet fly into view and hover across, camera following them.)
Both: What it means to keep Earth clean,
And green, green, green, green, green
Big Jake: You bet!
(Big Jake and Savannah swoop o.s.; they taxi back to the hangar, the third circle from the left on the banner having filled in with green.)
Both: Yes, what it means to keep Earth clean,
And green, green, green, green, green
Savannah: You said it, sugar!
Song ends
Tracy: Anything yet?
Snuffy: Uh...nope.
Tracy: Snuffy! Next up...Old Oscar, Revvin' Evan and Tuffy.
(Old Oscar, Revvin' Evan and Tuffy head toward the hangar-stage.)
Oscar: Boy! Well, uh, we'd like to call ourselves the Tarrytown Singing Quartet...eh, minus one.
Cheerful bluegrass acoustic guitar/bassoon melody, moderate 4 (E major)
Oscar: Ready, everybody?
Evan and Tuffy: Ready!
Oscar: Do you like chocolate?
(A thought bubble of a chocolate bar appears over Evan and Tuffy.)
Evan and Tuffy: Yes, we do!
(Fade to brown, then iris out to the first circle from the right on the banner having filled in with brown.)
Oscar: Then, brown is the color for you
Do you like root beer?
(A thought bubble of root beer appears over them.)
Tuffy: Yeah!
Evan: Me too!
Oscar: Then, brown is the color for you
(The view double irises in to a head-on view of Evan and Tuffy; they drive down between the stretches of mountains, Oscar lowering into the scene and flying from above.)
Oscar, Evan, Tuffy: Look around, look around, all over Tarrytown
High and low, no matter where you go, you're bound to see a little brown
(They zoom o.s.; Oscar gathers up inside a cave filled in with brown.)
Oscar: Do you like dark caves?
(And in Evan and Tuffy go.)
Evan and Tuffy: Yes, we do!
(Pull back to frame the entire cave.)
Oscar: Then, brown is the color for you
(Cut to a close-up of two brown bear cubs at Tarrytown National Park.)
Oscar: Do you like baby bears?
(Pull back, a brown bear and its two cubs; the old biplane, fire truck, and tow truck spectate.)
Tuffy: Yeah!
Evan: Me too!
Oscar: Then, brown is the color for you
(Cut to a head-on view of Evan and Tuffy; they drive through a canyon with a forest in between, and Oscar flies over.)
Oscar, Evan, Tuffy: Look around, look around, all over Tarrytown
High and low, no matter where you go, you're bound to see a little brown
(They zoom o.s.; the trio taxis back to the hangar.)
Oscar, Evan, Tuffy: High and low, no matter where you go, you're bound to see a little brown
Evan and Tuffy: That's right! (Oscar chuckles.)
Song ends
Snuffy: Uh, I've got it. I just thought of a color I like!
Tracy: You did? That's great! What is it?
Snuffy: Orange.
Herky: Tr-r-racy, is it my tur-r-rn now?
Tracy: Sure is, Herky.
Herky: Great! I can't wait to sing about my favor-r-rite color-r-r. Or-r-range.
Light, snazzy conga feel, brass/bongos/guiro/steel drum, brisk 4 (F major)
Snuffy: Oh, well, maybe orange isn't such a good idea after all.
(Tracy sighs; cut to a view outside the hangar. Herky lowers himself into view as he starts singing.)
Herky: Or-r-range,
Each time I think about or-r-range,
I'm r-r-reminded of
Pumpkins on Halloween,
Apr-r-ricots and tanger-r-rines,
Or-r-range.
Or-r-range,
My favor-r-rite cr-r-rayon is or-r-range.
I'm dr-r-rawing pictures of
Tiger-r-rs and tabby cats,
And donuts, when I sing, that's or-r-range.
Mmm...donuts, yummy!
Let's make a little stop,
Down at Andy's Donut Shop.
I'll show you the donuts that I like.
Andy puts the icing on just r-r-right,
Oh, by the way, did I for-r-rget to say it's...
Or-r-range,
The donut icing is or-r-range.
It's har-r-rd for-r-r me to think about,
When life would be without or-r-range!
I like my donuts, it's or-r-range!
The icing's got to be or-r-range, yummy!
Let's paint the donut holes or-r-range,
Oh, I'm donut cr-r-razy for or-r-range...
Ah, whoa, whoop whoo!!!
Song ends
Herky: Boy, singing sur-r-re makes me hungr-r-ry! I'm going to get some donuts. (He hovers away.)
Tracy: Look, Snuffy, you have to pick a color.
Snuffy: Don't worry, Tracy. No matter what, I won't let you down. I-I promise I'll pick a favorite color by tomorrow.
Tracy: Okay.
(Both monoplane and jet plane part ways.)
Narrator: Snuffy wished that he felt as confident as he had sounded. Try as he might, he still didn't know where to find something that would inspire him. But as luck would have it—
(Cut to an overview of Tarrytown during the next day, rain pouring down.)
Narrator: —the next morning, it rained.
(Cut to Tracy, Jay Jay and Snuffy inside the kids' hangar.)
Tracy: Oh no! Concert Day is ruined!
Snuffy: Whew, what a break.
Tracy: What?!?
Snuffy: Uh, I just said, we need a break, a break in the rain.
Jay Jay: Hey, look, Snuffy, you've got your wish.
(Jay Jay's perspective: the clouds part away vastly, letting the sun shine through once more.)
Snuffy: Uh-oh, it stopped raining.
Tracy: Great! Snuffy, you're going to sing your song first. Do you finally know which color you like most? (Close-up of Snuffy; he stammers.)
Narrator: Poor Snuffy. He was about to admit that he didn't have any idea which color he wanted to sing about. And then, it happened. (Snuffy looks outside; he smiles excitedly.)
Snuffy: Yes! (Pull back to frame Jay Jay and Tracy.) Yes!! Oh, yes!!!
(Snuffy's perspective: a rainbow displays its colorful beauty over the hills in the distance.)
Narrator: Finally, Snuffy saw his inspiration. And when it was time for him to sing...
(Wipe to Snuffy zipping to the main hangar; on the banner, the third circle from the right has been filled in with the colors of the rainbow.)
Snuffy: I like to sing a song about my favorite color, all of them! All the colors of the rainbow!
Soft harp melody with backing strings, slow 4 (A major)
Snuffy: Every color that you mention caught my eye and my attention
Every song you sang was really lots of fun
While deep in concentration, I was hit with inspiration
So I'm rowing all the colors into one
One rainbow, six colors, this world is such a joy
Red, green, yellow, orange, blue, purple
A gift sent from heaven,
For every girl and boy
Red, green, yellow, orange, blue, purple
Now, some days may be filled with cloudy skies,
But right behind the clouds, there's a surprise
One rainbow, six colors,
This world is such a joy
Red, green, yellow, orange, blue, purple,
Now you see
How beautiful
(Right on cue, the fleet flies into view; Oscar/Tracy/Big Jake to the left and Herky/Jay Jay/Savannah to the right.)
Others: How beautiful
Snuffy: A rainbow
Others: A rainbow
All: Can be
Song ends
(Close-up of Snuffy, the planes cheering for the happy monoplane o.s.)
Snuffy: Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Tracy: Snuffy, you're a big hit!
Narrator: And so, Snuffy was indeed a big hit. He had learned that sometimes, inspiration can come from something right before your very eyes. (Snuffy flies up to the rainbow.) Or it can be found at the end of a rainbow.
(Fade to black.)
